How I Read a Degree
A degree never replaces the planet, sign and house. It adds a layer of meaning on top of them. This is the order I always follow:
- Start with the planet. The planet tells you what part of you is speaking: your identity (Sun), your emotional needs (Moon), your voice (Mercury), and so on.
- Add the sign and house. The sign shows how that part of you expresses itself, and the house shows where in your life it plays out.
- Read the degree as the primary number. Use the degree exactly as your chart shows it. A planet at 17°18′ uses degree 17, not the 18th degree.
- Read the minute as a secondary note. The minute shows how the degree theme is practiced, complicated or supported. I never add the degree and minute together or turn 17°18′ into one big number.
- Notice the decan. Each sign has three decans of ten degrees, and each one adds the flavor of another sign of the same element.
- Look for what stands out. The anaretic degree (29°), a fresh entry (0°), the Aries Point, the traditional critical degrees, karmic debt and master numbers, and any degree that repeats across several planets all deserve extra attention.

The Special Degrees
The anaretic degree (29°) is the final degree of any sign and, to me, the most important degree to notice. A planet here carries the energy of culmination, final lessons and urgency, completing a whole chapter of its sign before it moves into the next.
A fresh entry (0°) is the first degree of a sign: raw, unshaped and new, with no habit to fall back on yet. I also read 0° as a threshold that can still blend with the sign before it, especially when the planet is retrograde and moving back toward that sign.
The Aries Point is 0° of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, where the personal meets the collective. Modern astrologers connect it with public life, visibility and being touched by the events of your time.
The traditional critical degrees come from the lunar mansions: 0°, 13° and 26° of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), 8°–9° and 21°–22° of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), and 4° and 17° of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). A planet on one tends to speak louder.
The fame degrees are a modern idea: some astrologers point to 5°, 17° and 29° (and sometimes 28°) as degrees of visibility. I read them as an invitation to be seen, not a promise of fame.
Karmic debt numbers (13, 14, 16 and 19) come from numerology. I read them as soul lessons rather than punishments: 13 asks for steady, patient effort, 14 for freedom with moderation, 16 for humility and rebuilding, and 19 for independence that still lets others in. They can appear in the degree, in the minute, or inside a minute’s reduction trail, such as 49/13/4.
Master numbers (11, 22, 33 and 44) are kept visible in the reduction trail, so 29° reads as 29/11/2. I read them as heightened potential that asks to be grounded, and I still read the root number underneath.
The decans divide each sign into three parts of ten degrees. The first decan (0°–9°) is the sign at its purest. The second (10°–19°) and third (20°–29°) take on the flavor of the next signs of the same element, so 5° Cancer and 25° Cancer feel different: the first is pure Cancer, the second carries a Pisces undertone.
17°, the spiritual teacher. I see 17° as the degree of wisdom and the spiritual teacher. A planet here carries knowledge that is meant to be lived first and then shared.

- Degree and minute: every position is shown exactly as astrology software displays it, truncated rather than rounded, so 17°18′44″ reads as 17°18′. Seconds are not interpreted.
- Numbers: the degree (0–29) is the primary reflection and the minute (00–59) is a secondary one. Each compound number keeps its full reduction trail, such as 17/8 or 29/11/2, and a minute of 00 is read as zero, not as missing information.
- Houses and Nodes: houses are Placidus, and the North Node is the True Node. Your Rising sign, Midheaven and houses need an accurate birth time, and your Ascendant moves about one minute of arc every four seconds, so treat its minute with care.
- My framework: the degree and minute meanings come from my own Sage Reality 11 number library. This is an original symbolic framework.
- My methods: every calculator here is based on my own research and the methodologies I use in my practice, including the True Node and the orbs I work with. Other astrologers use different methods, and you are always welcome to use your own.
