If you’re trying to find your destiny in your birth chart without triplicity lords, you’re walking blindfolded through a storm.
Ancient astrologers like Dorotheus of Sidon laid the foundation for a powerful system of timing known as Directing by Triplicities, a tool that helps us unlock the unfolding narrative of our lives by dividing time into specific planetary rulerships. This technique doesn’t just show what happens… it reveals when the core themes of your life activate, especially around areas like finances, career, and emotional development.
Let’s break this down with an actual example: my chart.
A Water Nocturnal Chart: Cancer Rising and the Mars-Venus-Moon Sequence
With a Cancer Ascendant in a nocturnal chart, my triplicity rulers for water signs, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, are Mars as the main ruler, Venus as the second (or co-ruler), and Moon as the third. These rulers aren’t arbitrary. They represent sequential guardians of your life phases, marking critical periods of action, growth, and change. Each planet gets a certain amount of time depending on the technique (we won’t get too technical here), but the most essential takeaway is that each ruler dominates a season of your life.
In my chart:
- Ascendant: 5° Cancer
- Mars: 7° Cancer (conjunct the ASC, angular, highly active)
- Part of Fortune: 10° Cancer
- Moon: 11° Cancer
- Sun and Mercury: 17° Cancer
- Venus: 29° Leo (in 3rd house)
- MC: 0° Pisces
This dense cluster in Cancer shows an overwhelmingly watery influence, which immediately activates the triplicity sequence of Mars → Venus → Moon.
First Triplicity Lord: Mars — The Warrior’s Beginning
Mars, ruling the first phase, is right on the Ascendant in Cancer. While Mars is traditionally in its fall in Cancer, its angularity gives it undeniable force. Mars here indicates a period in early life marked by emotional assertiveness, survival instincts, and a need to fight for one’s place in the world, especially around identity, body, and personal direction. Mars rules the 6th house of daily routines and the 11th house of community, goals, and networks in my Placidus chart, which suggests this early period involved hard work, managing service roles, and finding a tribe aligned with my values. Mars also colored how I approached friendships, visions for the future, and day-to-day problem-solving.
Mars on the Ascendant, ruling the 6th house of daily work and the 11th house of long-term goals and community, points to an early life shaped by personal drive, hard work, and a desire to carve out my own path through persistent effort and unconventional connections.
Second Triplicity Lord: Venus — Refining and Receiving
When the Venus period begins, things soften. Venus at 29° Leo, in the 3rd house, rules finances in a subtler way. In a nocturnal chart, Venus carries significant weight. While she isn’t ruling any financial houses directly, her placement in Leo (the sign of personal recognition) and in the house of communication, learning, and short-term plans, points to a time of financial growth through speaking, writing, or other expressive outlets. The Venus phase marks the rise of creative, intellectual, or community-based opportunities. This is a phase where money may flow more easily, but also where values are being refined.
This is supported by the fact that Venus aspects my Cancer stellium by semi-sextile, she’s quietly feeding it.
Third Triplicity Lord: Moon — Deepening the Emotional and Material World
The Moon, in her own sign in Cancer and located just past the ASC, offers a powerful final phase in the triplicity sequence. The Moon is not only dignified but also tightly conjunct the Part of Fortune, indicating that emotional clarity, intuition, and nurturing qualities become central to success and fulfillment. With the Moon in the 1st house, the later part of life could be defined by embodiment… living my truth, nurturing others, and experiencing material support in resonance with my inner emotional world.
This is where the Moon’s rulership over the 1st and 2nd houses comes alive. The 2nd house begins at 21° Cancer, so the Moon also governs money, possessions, and values. The final third of life, ruled by the Moon, is deeply tied to financial maturity, intuitive management of resources, and comfort. This is the most prosperous period of the entire triplicity sequence.
Financial Significators in a Water Nocturnal Chart
In financial timing, water charts with nocturnal emphasis (especially Cancer risings) should look closely at:
- The Moon, especially when it rules or is placed in the 2nd house
- Venus, for ease and pleasure in material affairs
- The Part of Fortune, for natural abundance and flow
- Triplicity Lords, as life shifts from action (Mars), to connection (Venus), to intuition (Moon)
Because both the Moon and Part of Fortune fall in the 1st house (but rule the 2nd), my body, habits, and self-image are key to attracting wealth. My physical presence (how you show up in the world) is the magnet. I am the resource.
Timing Your Triplicity Lords
One powerful way to use this system is by directing the ASC through time (Primary Directions or other traditional timing techniques), watching when it enters terms, bounds, or aspects planets like Venus or the Moon. Paying attention as my Mars period ended and Venus period begun. I shifted from striving to attracting. And when I enter my Moon period, this is my harvest phase.
This system doesn’t replace modern transits or progressions; it enriches them. It gives a backdrop to your entire life story, showing when you are climbing, when you’re coasting, and when you’re meant to go inward and rest.
Finding Your Triplicity Lords
To find your triplicity lord for an overall life review, begin with the element of your Ascendant, since this element describes the entire arc of your life. Then check whether your chart is diurnal or nocturnal by locating the Sun. If the Sun is above the horizon in houses seven through twelve, it is a diurnal chart. If the Sun is below the horizon in houses one through six, it is a nocturnal chart. Once you know this, use the Dorothean triplicity table to determine the sequence of rulers.
In a diurnal chart, the order goes diurnal lord first, nocturnal lord second, and partner lord last.
In a nocturnal chart, the order begins with the nocturnal lord, then moves to the diurnal lord, and finishes with the partner lord.
This sequence shows which planet governs the first part of life (0-25), which steps in during the middle years (26-50), and which provides support and maturation in the final stage (50+).
