Which Lilith are you looking at?
Most people don’t know there’s a choice. They look up their Lilith sign, read a description that feels a little off, and wonder why it doesn’t quite fit….
Here’s why. There isn’t one Lilith in astrology. There are three. Three different points, calculated three different ways, each telling a different part of the same story: the part of you that refused to be made smaller.
Who Was Lilith?
In Jewish folklore, Lilith was the first woman, made from the same earth as Adam. When he insisted she lie beneath him, she refused. She spoke the secret name of God and left the garden rather than be made smaller. Later stories turned her into a demon, the night-flying terror who harmed mothers and children.
But underneath the fear is the oldest story of all: a woman who chose exile over submission. In astrology, every version of Lilith points to the same territory, where you’ve been rejected, shamed or silenced for being too much, and where your untamed power still lives. For more on the myths behind her, read The Hidden Eden Code in Your Birth Chart.
1. Black Moon Lilith: The Empty Point
Black Moon Lilith is the Lilith most astrologers mean. She isn’t a physical object. She’s the lunar apogee, the point where the Moon’s orbit swings farthest from the Earth. An empty point in space, which is fitting for a woman who was pushed out of the story.
She takes about nine years to travel the whole zodiac, spending roughly nine months in each sign. You’ll see her calculated two ways: mean Lilith, which smooths out her path, and true or osculating Lilith, which follows her actual, wobbling position. They can sit several degrees apart, so check which one your chart is using.
What she shows: your raw instinct, sexuality and rage, and the place where you’ve felt rejected or exiled for being yourself. Her house shows where you refuse to compromise.
Lower octave: Rebellion for its own sake, shame turned into self-sabotage, or pushing people away before they can reject you.
Higher octave: Unapologetic authenticity. You stop asking permission to be who you are.
2. Asteroid Lilith (1181): The Lived Story
Asteroid Lilith is a real body, asteroid number 1181, orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. She was discovered in 1927 and named for the French composer Lili Boulanger, not for the myth itself, but astrologers who work with her find the Lilith themes come through clearly.
Because she’s a physical body moving through your chart, I read her as the more embodied, lived version of the story. Where Black Moon Lilith describes the wound, asteroid Lilith shows how it plays out in real relationships and real choices: where you stand your ground, where you walk away, and where you’ve been punished for saying no.
Lower octave: Repeating situations where you’re cast as the problem, or holding back your truth to avoid conflict.
Higher octave: Holding your boundaries with calm authority, and refusing to shrink without needing to fight.

3. Dark Moon Lilith: The Moon That May Not Exist
The third Lilith has the strangest story. In 1898, the German astronomer Georg Waldemath reported seeing a second, dark moon orbiting the Earth. Nobody was ever able to confirm it. Years later, the astrologer Sepharial gave this hypothetical moon the name Lilith, and in the 1960s Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson brought it into wider astrological use as Dark Moon Lilith.
Because the Waldemath moon was never confirmed, its meaning is purely symbolic, and the ephemerides for it vary. I include it here because many astrologers work with it, and its themes are worth knowing. Dark Moon Lilith is usually read as the most hidden layer of the Lilith story: the deepest exile, the rejection that happened before you had words for it, and the part of yourself you’ve hidden even from you.
Lower octave: Self-rejection, or carrying shame that was never yours.
Higher octave: Reclaiming the parts of yourself you once believed were unlovable.
How the Three Liliths Work Together
Think of them as three layers of one story.
- Black Moon Lilith is the wound and the instinct: where you were pushed out, and where your raw power lives.
- Asteroid Lilith is the lived story: how that wound plays out in your relationships and choices.
- Dark Moon Lilith is the hidden layer: the exile so deep it feels like it was always there.
When two or three of them fall in the same sign or house, or touch the same planet, that theme becomes impossible to ignore. And if any Lilith sits within a few degrees of your Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC, her story is written right into the way you meet the world.
Lilith Through the Houses
Whichever Lilith you’re reading, her house shows where the story lives.
- 1st house: Your body, your presence and how you’re seen. You may have been told you’re too much just by walking into a room.
- 2nd house: Money, worth and desire. Learning that wanting things isn’t shameful.
- 3rd house: Your voice. Words you were told not to say.
- 4th house: Family and home. Exile from the family story, or a mother line that carried rage.
- 5th house: Pleasure, creativity and romance. Joy you were taught to hide.
- 6th house: Work and the body. Refusing to be a servant to systems that drain you.
- 7th house: Partnership. Equality in love is non-negotiable.
- 8th house: Intimacy, sexuality and power. Taboo, trust and taking your power back.
- 9th house: Belief and religion. Rejecting doctrines that demanded you be smaller.
- 10th house: Career and reputation. Being seen as a disruptor in public life.
- 11th house: Friends and community. Being the outsider who changes the group.
- 12th house: The hidden and the spiritual. Lilith working through dreams, solitude and the unconscious.
Lilith’s Sisters
Lilith rarely works alone. The goddesses who were demonized, exiled or silenced tend to show up together in a chart: Medusa, Persephone, Sekhmet, Hekate. You can read more about them in She Wasn’t a Monster and Hekate in the Birth Chart.

Final Thoughts
If your Lilith never quite fit, you may have been reading only one third of her story.
Black Moon Lilith is the empty point of the lunar apogee, the wound and the raw instinct. Asteroid Lilith, number 1181, is the lived story, showing how that wound plays out in your relationships and choices. Dark Moon Lilith, the hypothetical Waldemath moon, is the hidden layer, symbolic and debated, but still a mirror for the exile you may carry deepest. Read together, sign by sign and house by house, they show where you were told you were too much, and where your power is waiting to come home.
Not a demon. Not a warning. But the woman who walked out of the garden and kept her name.
Find all three. Listen to what they’ve been carrying. And stop making yourself smaller.
With Love and Light,
Tiff
