Have you ever walked into a place for the very first time and felt like you’d been there before?
Picked up a craft, a language or a book about some far-off century and felt it settle into you like a memory instead of a lesson?
Loved someone the moment you met them. Feared something you’ve never once experienced. Carried a grief you couldn’t trace back to anything in this life….
That isn’t your imagination.
That’s your soul remembering.
October has always been the season of remembering. As we move toward Samhain, the old Celtic new year, the veil between the worlds is said to grow thin. The ancestors come close. The dead are honored. And for a lot of us, the past starts whispering a little louder than usual.
Your birth chart has been holding that past the whole time. Not as a history book full of names and dates. But as a map of memory: the roles you’ve played, the lessons you didn’t finish, and the gifts you carried in with you.
Let’s read it together.
What Is Past Life Astrology?
Past life astrology, also called karmic or evolutionary astrology, reads your birth chart as one chapter in a much longer story. Your soul didn’t start here. It arrived with a history, and that history shows up as patterns: the things that come easily to you, the things that keep repeating, and the fears that never quite seem to belong to you.
When I read past lives in a chart, I follow a handful of threads. The South Node. The houses of soul memory. Your retrograde planets. Saturn and Chiron. Each one tells part of the story, and woven together, they tell the whole thing.
One important note before we begin. A chart can’t hand you a name, a country or a calendar date for a past life. What it can do is show you the themes your soul keeps returning to, and that’s where the real healing lives. So when I say a placement points to lifetimes as a healer, a soldier or a priestess, I’m describing an archetype your soul knows by heart.
The South Node: The Soul You’ve Been
The South Node is the most famous past life point in astrology, and for good reason. It shows the roles your soul has played most often. The skills you arrived with. The habits you fall back on when life gets hard.
Its sign shows the flavor of who you’ve been. Its house shows where that story played out. And the planet that rules it shows how you did it.
Picture a South Node in Capricorn in the 10th house. That points to lifetimes of leadership, duty and public responsibility: someone who carried the weight of a village, a family business or an entire kingdom. In this life, that soul often feels pulled to take charge before anyone’s even asked.
Lower octave: You keep playing the old role because it’s familiar, even when it’s draining the life out of you.
Higher octave: You keep the wisdom, set down the weight, and use that old gift in service of where your soul is going next.
The South Node always works as a pair with the North Node, and the two of them deserve a guide of their own. I’m writing that one next.
The Houses of Soul Memory
Every house in your chart holds a story, but three of them hold soul memory more than any other: the 12th, the 4th and the 8th. Planets living in these houses carry the loudest echoes of where you’ve been.
The 12th House: What You Carried In
The 12th house is the last house of the chart, the place where one cycle ends before the next begins. That’s why so many karmic astrologers read it as the house of what came before. Planets here often feel hidden, even to you. They’re gifts you can’t quite name and sorrows you can’t quite trace.
A Moon in the 12th house points to lifetimes spent in temples, convents and healing houses, behind walls where feeling deeply was the work. Venus in the 12th often points to a love that had to be kept secret, or given up.
Lower octave: You escape, you over-give, or you carry an old sadness that was never yours to carry in this life.
Higher octave: You become the mystic, the healer or the artist who channels something bigger than yourself.
If your 12th house is busy, my post on the 12th house and the souls who return to complete their work goes much deeper.
The 4th House: Roots, Lineage and the Family Soul
The 4th house is your roots: your home, your family line and the emotional foundation you were born into. In past life work, it often shows the soul family you’ve traveled with before and the ancestral patterns you agreed to heal this time around.
Saturn in the 4th house, for example, often points to heavy family responsibility carried across more than one lifetime, along with generational beliefs that are finally ready to be broken.
Lower octave: You repeat the family story, even the parts you swore you never would.
Higher octave: You become the cycle breaker, the one who heals backward and forward through the whole line.
Past lives and family lines are woven together. That’s exactly why I wrote Astrology’s Role in Breaking Generational Curses and built Course 102: Lineage Contracts, which walks you through the vows you inherited and how to release them.
The 8th House: Death, Rebirth and Soul Debts
The 8th house holds what we share, what we inherit and what we lose. It’s the house of death and rebirth, and in past life astrology it often shows the endings your soul still remembers.
Pluto or Mars in the 8th house can point to lifetimes of power, danger and intense transformation. In this life, that memory tends to show up around trust, intimacy and money that’s tied to other people.
Lower octave: Control, suspicion and a fear of loss that makes it hard to let anyone all the way in.
Higher octave: You become the transformer, the one who can walk other people through their own rebirth because you’ve already walked through yours.
Retrograde Planets: The Lessons You Came Back to Finish
Retrograde planets are some of my favorite past life clues. When a planet appears to move backward at the moment of your birth, it points to unfinished business. Something your soul started in another life and came back to complete.
Mercury retrograde often points to words left unsaid or ideas that were silenced.
Venus retrograde returns to old questions of love and worth, and sometimes to old relationships.
Mars retrograde points to courage and anger that were turned inward, or battles that never really ended.
Jupiter retrograde rebuilds faith from the inside out, after beliefs that didn’t hold.
Saturn retrograde reworks authority and responsibility until the discipline comes from within.
Lower octave: The same lesson keeps showing up, wearing different faces, until you finally turn around and look at it.
Higher octave: Going back over the lesson becomes your mastery. You understand it more deeply than anyone who learned it the easy way.
Saturn and Chiron: The Teacher and the Wound
Saturn is the karmic teacher of the zodiac. Its sign and house show where your soul agreed to earn mastery the slow way, often because it was left unfinished before. Your Saturn Return around age 29 is when that agreement comes due. You can find your exact dates with my free Saturn Return calculator.
Chiron is the wound your soul carried in. Where it lands in your chart, you may feel tender in a way that doesn’t match this life’s story. But Chiron is also the healer, and the wound becomes your medicine for other people. My post on the hidden key to understanding Chiron goes deeper into how this one works.
Why I Read Past Lives Through More Than One Lens
Here’s something most past life readings won’t tell you: the house system you use changes the story you hear. So I don’t read past lives through just one.
Placidus shows how a soul lesson plays out in this incarnation, in your everyday life.
Whole Sign shows the broader archetype of the soul lesson itself.
Equal House shows where your soul is seeking balance.
Sidereal (I use the Lahiri ayanamsha) shows what your soul carried over from past incarnations.
Picture Saturn in the 5th house in Placidus and the 4th house in Whole Sign. In this life, the lesson plays out through creativity, joy and self-expression. But the bigger soul story is about the family line: generations who didn’t believe creativity could ever feed them, and one soul who came back to prove them wrong.
Same Saturn. Two layers of the same story.
If you want to understand each of these systems on your own, my Astrological Systems Guide walks through Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal, Sidereal, Draconic and more.
Your Past Life Timeline: How Long Ago Was It?
One of the questions I hear most is, “How long ago was it?”
No chart can give you a calendar date. Anyone who promises you one is guessing. What a chart can give you is a sense of distance: lifetimes that are relatively recent, lifetimes in the middle distance, and lifetimes so old they feel like bedrock.
I read that distance through a 12th house timing method and the quality of each sign. Some signs carry the feel of a brand new chapter, which I wrote about in Cardinal Signs and Recent Past Lives. Others carry some of the oldest soul memory in the zodiac, like the ones I explored in Sagittarius Karma and the Oldest Souls of the Zodiac.
Signs You’ve Lived a Past Life
Your chart is where the story is written. But your body and your life usually start telling it first. These are some of the most common signs I hear from clients:
- Déjà vu in places you’ve never been.
- An instant pull toward a certain era, culture or craft.
- Fears or phobias with no clear cause in this life.
- Recurring dreams that feel more like memories.
- Meeting someone and feeling like you already know them.
- Being called an old soul when you were still a child.
If any of those made you pause, your chart is where those feelings finally start to make sense.

Final Thoughts
Your soul didn’t arrive empty-handed.
It came carrying the roles you’ve played, the places you’ve called home, the endings you’ve survived and the lessons you didn’t quite finish. Your South Node remembers who you’ve been. Your 12th, 4th and 8th houses hold what you carried in. Your retrograde planets mark the lessons you came back to complete, and Saturn and Chiron show you the teacher and the wound that walk beside you.
None of it is a sentence. All of it is information.
When you can see the pattern, you can finally choose what to keep and what to lay down. That’s what past life work is really for. Not to live in the past. But to stop the past from living through you.
This season, while the veil is thin, listen to what your chart remembers.
With Love and Light,
Tiff
