North Node and South Node: The Karmic Contract Written in Your Birth Chart

What if the patterns you keep repeating aren’t proof that you’re stuck?

What if they’re a contract?

Before you arrived, your soul made an agreement. Not with a lawyer. Not on paper. But in the sky, at the exact moment you were born, written into two points most people have never been told about….

Your North Node and your South Node.

One points to where you’ve been. The other points to where you’re going. And the whole of your life is the walk between them.

What Are the North Node and South Node in Astrology?

The lunar nodes aren’t planets. They’re the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the path of the Sun, and they always sit exactly opposite each other in your chart. Eclipses happen near the nodes, which is a big part of why astrologers have tied them to fate for thousands of years.

The nodes move backward through the zodiac, spending about a year and a half in each sign. That means everyone born in the same window of time shares the same nodal signs, but the houses, the rulers and the planets touching them make your contract entirely your own. In all my calculators and readings I use the True Node, which follows the node’s actual position rather than its average.

Your South Node shows where your soul has been: the gifts you arrived with, the roles you’ve played before and the comfort zone you fall back into when life gets hard.

Your North Node shows where your soul is growing: the unfamiliar, sometimes uncomfortable direction that brings the deepest fulfillment of this lifetime.

Here’s the part that most people miss. The goal isn’t to abandon your South Node. It’s to carry its gifts toward your North Node. The South Node is the wisdom. The North Node is where that wisdom finally gets to be used for something new.

And don’t stop at the sign. Every node answers to the planet that rules it. If your North Node is in Libra, Venus is your guide forward, and wherever Venus sits in your chart shows how you get there. Your Nodes Sign by Sign: The Six Karmic Axes

Because the nodes always sit opposite each other, they come in six pairs. Find your North Node below. Your South Node is the sign across from it.

Aries and Libra: The Self and the Other

If your North Node is in Aries, your South Node is in Libra. You’ve lived lifetimes as the partner, the diplomat and the peacekeeper. You know how to keep everyone happy, sometimes at your own expense. This time, your soul is learning to choose for yourself, take up space and act without waiting for permission.

If your North Node is in Libra, your South Node is in Aries. You’ve lived lifetimes as the warrior, the pioneer and the one who survived alone. Independence is second nature. This time, your soul is learning partnership, compromise and the courage it takes to let someone in.

Lower octave: You either live entirely through other people, or you refuse to need anyone at all.

Higher octave: You build a self strong enough to love fully, without losing who you are.

Taurus and Scorpio: Security and Surrender

If your North Node is in Taurus, your South Node is in Scorpio. You’ve lived lifetimes of intensity, crisis and power, often tangled up in other people’s resources and secrets. This time, your soul is learning simplicity, self-worth and the radical peace of building something that’s yours.

If your North Node is in Scorpio, your South Node is in Taurus. You’ve lived lifetimes of comfort and stability, holding tightly to what you had. This time, your soul is learning to let go, to transform and to trust what happens when you truly merge with another person.

Lower octave: You’re addicted to crisis, or you cling to comfort long after it’s stopped serving you.

Higher octave: You’re steady enough to transform without ever losing yourself.

Gemini and Sagittarius: The Question and the Answer

If your North Node is in Gemini, your South Node is in Sagittarius. You’ve lived lifetimes as the teacher, the preacher and the traveler who already had the answers. This time, your soul is learning to listen, ask better questions and see more than one side of the story.

If your North Node is in Sagittarius, your South Node is in Gemini. You’ve lived lifetimes as the messenger and the gatherer of information, always collecting, always talking. This time, your soul is learning faith, meaning and the trust it takes to follow a bigger truth.

Lower octave: You preach without listening, or you know everything and believe in nothing.

Higher octave: Your wisdom stays curious, and your curiosity finally leads somewhere.

Cancer and Capricorn: Home and the World

If your North Node is in Cancer, your South Node is in Capricorn. You’ve lived lifetimes of leadership, duty and public responsibility. You know how to carry the weight. This time, your soul is learning to feel, to nurture and to come home to yourself and the people you love.

If your North Node is in Capricorn, your South Node is in Cancer. You’ve lived lifetimes as the caretaker, the mother and the keeper of the hearth. This time, your soul is learning to step into public authority and build something that lasts beyond the walls of home.

Lower octave: You hide inside your duty, or you hide inside your home.

Higher octave: You lead with your heart, and you nurture with real strength.

Leo and Aquarius: The Heart and the Collective

If your North Node is in Leo, your South Node is in Aquarius. You’ve lived lifetimes inside groups, causes and communities, often as the observer who stayed a little apart. This time, your soul is learning to shine, to create and to be seen as yourself with your whole heart open.

If your North Node is in Aquarius, your South Node is in Leo. You’ve lived lifetimes as royalty, as the performer and as the center of attention. This time, your soul is learning to share the spotlight and use your gifts in service of the many.

Lower octave: You detach from everyone, or you need applause to feel real.

Higher octave: Your heart lights up the whole room and the whole cause.

Virgo and Pisces: Service and Surrender

If your North Node is in Virgo, your South Node is in Pisces. You’ve lived lifetimes as the mystic, the monk and the dreamer, and sometimes as the martyr. This time, your soul is learning to ground your spirituality in daily life, with boundaries, routines and practical service.

If your North Node is in Pisces, your South Node is in Virgo. You’ve lived lifetimes of perfectionism, analysis and healing work done strictly by the book. This time, your soul is learning to surrender, to trust and to lead with compassion instead of control.

Lower octave: You escape into the clouds, or you try to control every single detail.

Higher octave: You live sacred service: spirit with its sleeves rolled up.

The Houses Matter Too

Your nodes don’t just fall in two signs. They fall across two opposite houses, and the houses show where in your life the contract actually plays out: self and partnership, your own resources and shared ones, everyday learning and higher wisdom, home and career, personal joy and community, daily service and spiritual surrender.

Picture a North Node in Leo in the 10th house. That’s a soul being asked to shine in public, often through a career that puts their creativity on display, while the South Node in the 4th house keeps pulling them back toward the safety of home.

Watch for two more clues while you’re here. A planet sitting right on either node becomes part of the contract itself. And a planet squaring both nodes at once points to what karmic astrologers call a skipped step: a lesson left unfinished that has to be picked back up before you can move forward.

Saturn: The Teacher Who Holds the Contract

If the nodes are the contract, Saturn is the one who makes sure you read the fine print. Its sign and house show where your soul agreed to earn mastery the slow way, through patience, structure and time. Your Saturn Return, around age 29 and again around 58, is when that agreement comes due.

Lower octave: Fear, restriction and a deep-down belief that you’ll never be ready.

Higher octave: Earned authority. The kind of strength nobody can ever take from you, because you built it yourself.

Chiron: The Wound That Becomes Your Medicine

Chiron shows the wound your soul carried into this life, the place where you feel tender in a way that doesn’t always match your story. But Chiron was also the great healer of myth. Where it sits in your chart is where your wound becomes medicine for other people.

When Chiron touches your nodes, the wound is woven right into your contract. Healing it isn’t a side quest. It’s the path. My post on the hidden key to understanding Chiron explores why some people heal inward and others heal outward.

Your Nodal Returns: When the Contract Comes Due

The nodes come back to the exact place they held at your birth about every 18.6 years: around ages 18 to 19, 37, 55 to 56 and 74. Halfway between, around ages 9, 28, 46 to 47 and 65, they swap places, and your North Node sits where your South Node used to be.

Look back at those ages in your own life. You’ll probably find turning points. People who arrived. Doors that closed. A sudden, undeniable sense of direction.

That’s your contract checking in.

Because eclipses happen along the nodes, eclipse seasons activate the same story. The eclipse just before your birth carries its own soul contract, and you can find yours with the free Prenatal Eclipses Contracts Calculator. Final Thoughts

Your North Node and South Node aren’t a punishment. They’re an agreement.

Your South Node holds everything you’ve already mastered: the roles, the gifts and the habits your soul knows by heart. Your North Node holds everything you came here to become. The houses show where the contract plays out, the rulers show how you get there, Saturn holds you to it, Chiron turns the wound into medicine, and your nodal returns keep checking in, every 18 or so years, to see how far you’ve come.

Not stuck. Not behind. But exactly on the path you agreed to walk.

Take what you’ve learned. Carry it forward. And trust where it’s leading.

With Love and Light,
Tiff
