The Dead Come Back Every Scorpio Season (And Halloween Is Proof)

Every October 31, we celebrate Halloween. But have you ever wondered why this particular time of year became tied to spirits, ancestors, death and the unseen world?

Why not spring? Why not the longest night in December?

I think the answer is written in the sky. Every year, right as the Sun moves through Scorpio, the dead come back. Not in our living rooms. Not in a horror movie. But in our memories, our family stories, and the patterns we didn’t know we were still carrying.

And Halloween is the proof.

Where Halloween Began: Samhain and the Darker Half of the Year

Halloween’s earliest roots reach back to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the darker half of the year. The fields were cleared. The animals were brought in. The nights grew long.

Samhain was a threshold. It was the night the living honored those who had crossed into death, and the boundary between the two worlds was said to grow thin.

When Irish and Scottish immigrants carried these traditions to the United States, especially during the nineteenth century, Halloween slowly became part of American culture. The costumes and the candy came later. The thin veil came first.

Now Consider the Astrology: Halloween Falls in Scorpio Season

October 31 always falls during Scorpio season, the stretch of the year from about October 23 to November 21 when the Sun moves through Scorpio. Scorpio is the sign of transformation, death, rebirth, hidden truths and the mysteries that live beneath the surface of ordinary life.

In traditional astrology, Scorpio is ruled by Mars. Here, Mars is the planet of severance and survival, and the courage to look straight at what frightens us.

Modern astrology also gives Scorpio to Pluto, the lord of the underworld. Pluto carries ancestral inheritance, the things buried long ago, and transformation so deep that you come out the other side as someone new.

And this is where the symbolism becomes fascinating.

Samhain marked a threshold between seasons, when the living honored the dead. Scorpio speaks the same language. It asks us to face what has ended, recognize what remains, and understand how the past keeps shaping the present.

If you want to go deeper into this season on its own, I wrote about it in Scorpio Season and the Thinning Veil: Pluto, the 8th House and Your Rebirth Story.

Why the Dead Come Back Every Scorpio Season

Through an evolutionary astrology lens, Scorpio teaches that transformation asks us to release identities, attachments and patterns that have finished their purpose. Something has to die so something new can be born.

Through a karmic lens, Scorpio invites us to look at what we inherited from the people who came before us. The emotional patterns. The family beliefs about money, love and safety. The cycles our grandmothers and great-grandfathers never got the chance to finish.

So when I say the dead come back every Scorpio season, this is what I mean. Our ancestors return through what they left us. Through the way your mother’s voice comes out of your mouth when you’re tired. Through the fear you carry about money that never actually happened to you. Through the gift for healing, or reading people, or making something beautiful out of nothing, that showed up in your family three generations before you.

The lower octave of this season is being haunted. Repeating the same family story without knowing it’s a story. Holding on to grief, guilt or an old version of yourself because letting go feels like betrayal.

The higher octave is remembering. Honoring the people who came before you, keeping the gifts they passed down, and consciously laying down the weight that was never yours to carry.

What Costumes Have to Do With Your Hidden Self

Even wearing a costume carries a symbolic connection. Halloween gives us one night to step outside our everyday identity and become someone else.

Astrologically, this mirrors the tension between the self we show the world and the deeper layers of the psyche that stay hidden. Scorpio knows all about masks. It’s the sign that keeps the most private things private.

Here’s a question worth sitting with tonight. Is the costume the disguise…. or is it the part of you that finally gets to come out?

The 4th House and the 8th House: Halloween’s Ancestral Story in Your Chart

There’s another connection worth exploring, and it lives in your own birth chart: the 4th house and the 8th house.

The 4th House: Where You Came From

The 4th house is your roots. Your ancestry, your family foundations, your home, and the emotional inheritance passed down through generations. It sits at the very bottom of your chart, the deepest point, like the roots of a tree you can’t see but couldn’t stand without.

In its lower octave, the 4th house keeps you loyal to old family rules, even the ones that hurt. In its higher octave, it becomes a foundation you choose: keeping the roots that feed you and gently pulling up the ones that don’t.

The 8th House: What You’re Carrying

The 8th house is the house of shared resources, loss, inheritance, transformation and the deeper ties that bind our lives to other people. It’s Scorpio’s natural house, and it’s where we meet death in every form, including the death of who we used to be.

In its lower octave, the 8th house holds on: to control, to old wounds, to debts that aren’t only financial. In its higher octave, it’s the phoenix. The courage to let something end and trust what grows back.

Together, these two houses tell Halloween’s ancestral story. The 4th house asks where you came from. The 8th asks what you’re carrying, what must change, and what you’re ready to release.

Questions to Sit With This Halloween

Light a candle tonight, or set out a photo of someone you’ve lost, and journal on these:

  1. What did my family pass down to me that I want to keep?
  2. What am I still carrying that was never mine to carry?
  3. Which version of me is ready to die this Scorpio season?
  4. If one of my ancestors could speak to me tonight, what would they want me to know?

Final Thoughts

Halloween wasn’t born from a single planetary alignment, and Scorpio season didn’t create the celebration. Samhain came from the rhythm of the harvest and the turning of the year. Yet the way this season and these traditions speak the same language of death, remembrance and renewal is striking.

What began as a seasonal threshold became a night that still invites us to meet the mysterious. Scorpio and Pluto ask us to look beneath the surface. The 4th house reminds us where we came from. The 8th house asks what we’re ready to release.

And maybe that’s the deeper astrological story of Halloween. It isn’t simply a night about death. It’s a reminder that endings and beginnings are woven together, that our ancestors remain part of our story through what they passed down, and that transformation begins when we’re willing to look beneath the surface.

The dead come back every Scorpio season. Not to haunt us. But to remind us who we are.

Tiff
