The dark half of the year begins tonight.
For the old Celts, Samhain marked the turning point: the harvest was in, the light was leaving, and the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin. It wasn’t a time to fear the dark. It was a time to walk into it on purpose….
Three goddesses know that path better than anyone. Hekate holds the torch at the crossroads. Persephone knows the way down and the way back. And Kali clears away everything that was never really you. Each one lives somewhere in your chart.
Why the Dark Goddesses Belong to Samhain
Samhain falls in the middle of Scorpio season, the astrological descent of the year. The dark goddesses aren’t villains. They’re the guides for the part of life we’re taught to avoid: endings, grief, power, transformation and the wisdom that only comes from going down. For more on the season itself, read Scorpio Season and the Thinning Veil.
1. Hekate: The Keeper of the Crossroads
Hekate is the Greek goddess of crossroads, thresholds, magic and the night. She carries torches to light the way in the dark, and in the myth, she’s the one who helps Demeter search for Persephone. Asteroid 100 Hekate shows where you stand at a crossroads in life, where your intuition and magic are strongest, and where you’re asked to choose a path no one else can choose for you.
Lower octave: Paralysis at the crossroads, or using intuition to control instead of guide.
Higher octave: Trusting your inner knowing, and lighting the way for others in their dark.
Samhain journal prompt: What crossroads am I standing at right now, and which path does my intuition already know?

2. Persephone: The Queen Who Returns
Persephone was taken into the underworld as a maiden and came back as its queen. Because she ate the pomegranate seeds, she returns to the underworld every year, and her descent is said to bring winter. Asteroid 399 Persephone shows where you’ve been pulled into the depths against your will, and where you’ve learned to rule what once overwhelmed you.
Lower octave: Feeling like life happens to you, or staying stuck in the role of the one who was taken.
Higher octave: Sovereignty in both worlds. The one who can sit with grief and still come back to the light.
Samhain journal prompt: What descent in my life made me who I am, and what did I bring back from it?
3. Kali: The Mother Who Clears the Way
Kali is the Hindu goddess of time, change and destruction, often shown dark-skinned, with a garland of skulls, dancing fiercely. She’s terrifying only to the ego. To devotees, she’s the loving mother who destroys illusion so the soul can be free. Some astrologers use asteroid 4227 Kaali as her stand-in, though it was named for a meteorite crater in Estonia, so many read Kali’s themes through Pluto, Lilith and the 8th and 12th houses instead. I’ll go much deeper into her in my November 4 post.
Lower octave: Destroying everything in anger, or being so afraid of endings that nothing can change.
Higher octave: Fierce, loving release. Letting what’s false fall away so what’s true can live.
Samhain journal prompt: What illusion about myself am I finally ready to let die?
How the Three Work Together
Think of them as one journey. Hekate lights the threshold and helps you choose to go down. Persephone teaches you how to live in the dark and come back crowned. Kali clears away whatever doesn’t make the return trip. If any of these goddesses sits tight to your Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven, their story is woven into the way you live.
They also have sisters. Lilith, Medusa and Sekhmet carry the same message: the parts of the feminine that were feared were never the problem. Read more in The Three Liliths and Sekhmet in Your Birth Chart.
A Simple Samhain Ritual
- Light one candle at a window or doorway, Hekate’s threshold.
- Set out something for those you’ve lost: a photo, a name, a small offering.
- Answer each of the three journal prompts above.
- Tear out the Kali page and release it safely, by burning or burying it.
- Keep the Hekate and Persephone pages. Revisit them at the Winter Solstice, when the light begins to return.

Final Thoughts
The dark isn’t where you get lost. It’s where you find what you’re made of.
Samhain opens the dark half of the year, in the heart of Scorpio season. Hekate, asteroid 100, lights your crossroads and your intuition. Persephone, asteroid 399, shows the descent that made you and the sovereignty you brought back. Kali, read through asteroid Kaali or through Pluto, Lilith and the 8th and 12th houses, clears away what was never you. Together they’re one journey down and back, and each one comes with a question worth answering tonight.
Not monsters. Not curses. But guides for the part of the path no one else can walk for you.
Light your candle. Ask your questions. And let the dark goddesses walk you home.
With Love and Light,
Tiff
